Motor Neuron Disease


Motor Neuron Disease or MND( a kind of Neurological Disease) is a general term given to a group of diseases affecting the motor neurons that controls muscle movement in the brain and spinal cord. A condition affecting the motor neurons causes degeneration of the muscles, causing loss of mobility in the limbs, difficulty with speech, swallowing and breathing. In such conditions, the messages from the motor neurons are not able to reach the specific voluntary muscles causing immobility. The condition affects vital muscle activities and eventually loses the control over voluntary movement.

There are 4 major types of Motor Neuron Diseases including:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)
  • Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA)
  • Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS)

Symptoms for motor neuron disease

Common symptoms associated with motor neuron diseases include:

  • Muscle spasms and cramps
  • Weakness of the muscles of the arms and legs.
  • Difficulty in swallowing, breathing and drinking
  • Slurring of speech
  • Pain and muscle twitching
  • Change in voice
  • Fatigue
  • Emotional changes
  • Excess yawning and tiredness
  • Depression and anxiety

Causes for motor neuron diseases

According to Ayurveda, imbalance in doshas in the body is the primary causes of any disorder. Few common factors that lead to motor neuron diseases include:

  • Physical and mental stress
  • Accumulation of toxins and impurities in deep tissues
  • Improper diet and low physical activity
  • Deterioration of nervous system
  • Imbalance of Vata dosha
  • Compromised resistance ability
